FoodShare has a built-in policy that offers food replacement for people who lost their food during a natural disaster.
Many households in Wisconsin were without power for hours or even days this weekend. We Energies restored power to 260,000 customers in the days following Friday’s snowstorm, and the company is still working on more outages.
The disaster program offers food assistance to low-income households with food loss or damage caused by a natural disaster. A replacement for FoodShare benefits will be provided to a household if they report that food purchased with those benefits was destroyed.
To be eligible, FoodShare recipients must have experienced either of the following:
- Food damage because of disaster or spoiling by lack of refrigeration for at least 4 hours
- Damage to or destruction of a home or workplace
Hunger Task Force CEO Sherri Tussler told WISN 12 News those in need of these benefits have to click here and fill out the form. She said you don’t need to submit additional proof to receive the benefits.
“The state can tell who lost power. They’ve got a database. They compare that to We Energies,” she said.
