FoodWIse Distributes Food Safety Tips during COVID

Spring 2020

During COVID-10, food pantry managers identified limited access to reliable information to guide food safety practices as a concern for pantry users. Many questions and a wide range of misleading or erroneous information was reported through telephone calls and emails to FoodWIse staff statewide. Locally,  FoodWIse staff saw similar concerns and found pantries seldom with no funding & limited/no photocopy capacity, making distribution of printed information difficult.

State team created a one-page flyer listing food safety tips in the time of COVID-19 along with a simple recipe to make at home with typical pantry staples. FoodWIse coordinator worked with nutrition educator to contact each food pantry manager, ascertain whether the manager thought such flyers would be helpful and, if so, whether pantry staff is available to put the flyers in the food distribution packages.

Region 12 FoodWIse staff collected data, i.e., number of families using pantry, interest in printed flyers, staff capacity to distribute, mailing address, data of distribution, etc. Extension program assistants photocopy and mailed flyers to each pantry manager, distributing more than 500 flyers within three counties.
